This region is rich in history. During the Revolutionary War, Sybil Ludington's ride warning the people of the area of the advancement of British troops took her through Mahopac and Carmel. George Washington also spent some time in the area.

Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring, NY 10512 Phone: 845.265.4010 West Point Foundry apprentices and village children once used this museum as a schoolhouse. A reconstruction of the original schoolroom and a 19th-century country kitchen can be seen. The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and documents from the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, maps and more local history.

In Garrison, a restored mansion stands. Rooms complete with pieces by Duncan Phyfe makes Boscobel one of the nation’s leading museums of the decorative arts of the Federal period. The Restoration’s other attractions include an Orangerie and Herb Garden, the Rose Garden, a Woodland Trail, the Apple Orchard, the original Spring House, and the Museum Shop. Events during the year include seasonal workshops, lectures, a July Fourth celebration, productions by the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and Candlelight Tours at Christmas.
