This region is rich in history. During the Revolutionary War, Sybil Ludington's ride warning the people of the area of the advancement of British troops took her through Mahopac and Carmel. George Washington also spent some time in the area.

THE HUDSON HIGHLANDS

Your tour begins at the East end of the Bear Mountain Bridge and follows Route 9D North. Right under "Anthony's Nose".

THE OLD PHILIPSTOWN TURNPIKE

This tour should begin at the Cold Spring Landing ( see the Hudson Highlands Tour). You will start the Turnpike at 301 in Nelsonville. East of Route 9D.

HAMLETS AND FARMS

This tour starts on route 22 in the town of Southeast. You'll pass through Carmel and Putnam Valley.

 

HILLS AND DALES

You'll begin at Meads Corners in the town of Kent (Route 301 and Farmers Mills Road).

Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum

West Point Foundry apprentices and village children once used this museum as a schoolhouse. A reconstruction of the original schoolroom and a 19th-century country kitchen can be seen. The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and documents from the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, maps and more local history.

In Garrison, a restored mansion stands. Rooms complete with pieces by Duncan Phyfe makes Boscobel one of the nation’s leading museums of the decorative arts of the Federal period. The Restoration’s other attractions include an Orangerie and Herb Garden, the Rose Garden, a Woodland Trail, the Apple Orchard, the original Spring House, and the Museum Shop. Events during the year include seasonal workshops, lectures, a July Fourth celebration, productions by the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and Candlelight Tours at Christmas.
